Academic Success

Part of your GMC education is developing and refining the ability to critically analyze your situation and progress toward a solution. You are, and should be, the first person to judge your standing in your classes. If you have difficulty, seek help as soon as possible from :

  1. your professor
  2. your advisor
  3. the Life KEYS Coordinator: Pat Willis, pwillus@gmc.cc.ga.us
  4. Department Coordinator
  5. the Assistant Academic Dean: Tarn Burton, mhopper@gmc.cc.ga.us

Students are strongly encouraged to make use of the many services provided to promote academic success. These services include the E-Library, Tutor Lab, Writing Center and the Computer Lab. Computer systems are avaliable for reference, career research, and tutorials in several different locations on campus.

Treat the pursuit of your educational goal like a job. You must work at developing a good routine, interpersonal skills, critical analysis skills, a system of how to get help, solutions to problems, how to anticipate potential problems, and how and when to have fun. GMC has many individuals qualified to assist you with each of these pursuits

P.S. You don’t need to be struggling to make use of all the support services avaliable; these services may serve to improve your ability to make that top grade. GMC support services can help you avoid academic problems before they appear.

Important Reminders

Course Load
Choose your courses according to academic need, study requirements, time restrictions, and Grade Point Average (GPA). MEET WITH YOUR ADVISOR TO DETERMINE THE MOST REASONABLE SCHEDULE.

Time
Life demands time management. The successful person is one who learns to control time rather than be controlled by time. Study assigned material before the class, so that you are prepared. Make a schedule to include class timem study time, work time, and personal time. SET PRIORITIES IN YOUR SCHEDULE FOR STUDY AND CLASS WORK. Remember, college is a short term investment with a long term payoff.

Help
Get the help you need at the time you need it. Don’t wait until the end of the quarter to ask for help. MAKE USE OF THE FACILITIES AT GMC AND IN THE COMMUNITY. DON’T BE SHY. YOU ARE EXPECTED TO NEED HELP!

Control
Take control of your life and your success. Manage yourself before you are managed by circumstances that you could have changed. REMEMBER THAT EDUCATION IS A PART OF REAL LIFE; AVOID EXCUSES AND REMEMBER YOUR HARD WORK NOW WILL PAVE THE WAY FOR FUTURE SUCCESS.
